Summary
John Gray: False Dawn
Illusions of Global Capitalism
The book is a powerful analysis of the growing instability of global capitalism, which poses a great danger to the future of the world economy. The author shows that it is a neoliberal project whose goal is world economic and political domination. This project, which does not take into account the interests of the small, requires the use of enormous force for its establishment and maintenance. Despite the obvious aspirations for this kind of world domination, the great Western powers, due to their democratic tradition and cultural pluralism, are not particularly suitable carriers of such projects. The message of Gray's book is particularly relevant for countries in transition that are undergoing profound reforms of economic and social institutions as well as significant changes in their cultural values and orientations. Gray rejects the interpretation of liberalism as an instrument of rational agreement on the ideal arrangement of the world according to a unique concept and pattern. Convinced that the world will always be different, Gray calls for the establishment of modus vivendi, a reasonable compromise on living together in diversity.
