Summary
Peter J. Denning, Matti Tedre: Computational Thinking
Computational thinking illuminates a fundamental difference in the ways humans and machines process information.
Computational thinking is not something only programmers need to know, it is also a tool for thinking, for understanding our technology-inundated society. It raises our awareness of how everyday digital tools work, grounds our cyber-ethics, and strengthens our resistance to various threats, such as attempts to algorithmically direct our behavior, the marketing of fake news, directed at targeted individuals, the viral power of social media, and massive and data-intensive analyzes of our social life.
Furthermore, computational thinking has irreversibly changed the tools, methods, and epistemology of science. In addition to learning programming itself, learning computational thinking has numerous other advantages, and the book describes computational thinking in all its richness, breadth and depth.
Computational thinking is a new term that entered the public discourse only recently, in the midst of people's struggle with these questions. It brings hope that we can think clearly about the power and dangers of mass computing, and that we can learn to design computers, software, and networks to maximize benefits and minimize risks. Parents are already amazed at the ease with which their children navigate the digital world. Is computational thinking a recipe for our children to get an adequate education in this world?
We have designed this book as an instructive discussion that will help you understand what computational thinking is, which will put you in a better position if you want to answer these questions yourself.
