Summary
Ivo Družić: Resources and markets of the Croatian economy
The main reason for this book is the author's realization that it is necessary to further analyze certain significant aspects and facts of the Croatian economy that constantly escape the deeper analytical attention of Croatian economists. It seems that the lights of the analytical stage have been moved so that in the center of bright colors are always current topics (exchange rate, debt, deficit, privatization, foreign investments, inflation, etc.), while at the same time keeping certain elements in the shadows, which determine the real life of Croatian citizens in their dual role of entrepreneur/worker and taxpayer. Therefore, the long-term, suboptimal functioning of the Croatian economy in its development dimension gradually introduces a new circle of topics into the focus of analytical attention, outside of the hitherto dominant doctrinal debates. These topics cannot be avoided, no matter how sophisticated models and simple regressions are used to explain the virtues of the achieved currency and price stabilization, or the need for further reforms of the labor market, which, by lowering its price, should contribute to greater competitiveness and better export performance of the Croatian economy. The initial topic is, of course, the meaning, that is, the goal of the market transformation of the Croatian economy. Here, historical experience teaches that the only valid reason for the drastic change of previous economic systems is the betterment of employees and citizens. If the improvement of the personal standard of living of the majority of employees, citizens and their families, compared to previous periods, was not the goal and result of the transition, then the change in the economic system did not justify the final purpose.
