Summary

Plato: Alcibiades

In this dialogue, you will see it in a moment when I come back to it, there is a very explicit inquiry into what it means to take care of oneself, a very systematic two-part inquiry: what does this "self" mean, what does "care" mean? And we really have the first theory, we can even say, among all Plato's texts, a well-rounded theory of self-care. This can be considered the first significant theoretical emergence of epimeleia heautou. […] It seems to me that Plato, the Platonist moment, and especially the text Alcibiades, testify to one of these moments when a progressive reorganization of the entire old technology of the self took place, which thus existed long before both Socrates and Plato. It seems to me that all these old technologies of the self were, in Plato, in the Alcibiades dialogue, or somewhere between Socrates and Plato, subjected to a thorough reorganization. Or, in any case: in philosophical thought, the question of epimeleia heautou (care of the self) takes over, on a completely different level, with a completely different goal, and with partially
different forms, elements of earlier techniques.
