Summary

Andrija Filipović: Conditio humana

Immanence and ahumanity in the Anthropocene epoch

This study discusses the problems created by the new living conditions created by man's centuries-long impact on nature. The beginning of the 21st century was marked by attempts to respond on a theoretical and practical level to the numerous ecological challenges produced by the exploitation of the living and non-living world. The Anthropocene appears as a key term in these discussions. The Anthropocene is the geological epoch that is decisively determined by human activity on a planetary scale. The Anthropocene is "the segment of Earth's history during which humans became an important geological force". As a geological force, man is changing the entire planet with his own activity. But by changing the entire planet, man also changes himself, he changes the biological, chemical, physical and geological conditions in which man defines himself as a man. While earlier man defined himself by distinguishing himself from other living beings (primarily in relation to animals), now there is an additional layer in that distinction. In addition to the fact that man becomes a man (but is also called into question) through his difference from other beings, today man is constituted not only through other organic beings, but also through all those inorganic processes, matter and objects that he created through his activity.

Ahumano simultaneously names three interrelated phenomena: 1) that which becomes absolutely independent of man, be it "organic" or "inorganic" nature or the product of human activity, 2) a constitutive encounter with that which is (absolutely) independent, 3) the affective atmosphere of the Anthropocene epoch. It is no longer possible to copy the ways of living and thinking that have been valid until now, neither spatially (on other beings that are not human), nor temporally (projecting the sustainability and longevity of the human form of life and sociality into the future). Different (hyper)categories must be invented for these new conditions. In a way, these hypercategories – twistedness, transindividuality, disagency – play the role of dirty concepts for the polluted Anthropocene body subject.
