Summary
Hrvoje Jurić: Euphoria and euthanasia
Hrvoje Jurić's columns, written in different genre registers from autumn 2012 to summer 2016 and published on the radio, in daily newspapers and on the Internet, can be read as a chronicle of a stormy period in recent history, which was marked by euphoria surrounding the accession of the Republic of Croatia to the European Union and Croatian, Balkan, European and global euthanasia of society and sociability, community and togetherness, man and humanity. The author's analyzes of current social and political events, imbued with references from philosophy, literature, film and music, usually extend into far-reaching conclusions about the nature of the ruling system (bureaucratic-partitocratic-militaristic politics, neoliberal capitalism, reductionist technoscience and manipulative mass media) and into advocacy of direct democracy as the realization of the ideals of freedom, equality, justice and solidarity. Jurić's "acute notes on chronic problems" try to bring order to chaos, and those who disagree with his analyses, conclusions and proposals have at least been offered rich material for polemics about the state and perspectives of Croatia, the Balkans, Europe and the world.
