Filozofija, teorija ili način života?

Domanski Juliusz

Summary

Juliusz Domanski: Philosophy, theory or way of life?

Today it is quite evident that philosophy in classical antiquity was considered as a way of life, and not only as a theory, which we can thank for works such as Spiritual exercises and ancient philosophy, by P. Hadot (Sandorf and Mizantrop, 2013) and Philosophy as healing of the soul, by J. M. Voelke (Sandorf and Mizantrop, 2017). Such is work and Philosophy, theory or way of life? Juliusz Dománski. Domanski reflected on the entire history of the definition of philosophy from antiquity to the early Middle Ages, thereby emphasizing the importance of the "practical" aspect of ancient philosophy and the Renaissance. This book shows traces of the "practical" component that survived through the centuries in the church fathers, in humanists of the early Middle Ages as well as in scholasticism, to manifest itself more and more clearly among the thinkers of the late Middle Ages and eventually lead to the full restitution of the ancient understanding of philosophy among the humanists of the Renaissance of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, such as Petrarch or Erasmus. One who lives in a philosophical way is an atopos, as Plato said of Socrates. There is the leitmotif of this work. Domanski shows, among other things, how the theme of the philosopher's personality, unusual and foreign, sometimes inappropriate, in the eyes of his fellow citizens, appeared and disappeared in different stages of the history of philosophy and Christian theology, in order to triumphantly return in the age of humanism, in which the Christian philosopher was recognized as an atopos. The appearance and disappearance of this dimension can also be considered a sign of the presence or absence of a practical conception of philosophy. Domanski's book is an extremely important contribution to the presentation of the history of the concept of philosophy through time.
