In the last three decades of the 20th century, one particular group of French thinkers became extremely influential and famous in the USA. Compared to the British rock and roll invasion, the arrival of the works of Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze on American shores in the late 70s and early 80s caused a sensation.

Outside the university, the so-called French theory had a profound influence on the emergence of identity politics at the time, while simultaneously becoming a target of right-wing propaganda. But in university departments across the country, their poststructuralist form of radical doubt has transformed a variety of disciplines, from literature to anthropology and architecture.
