Summary

Francois Cusset: French Theory: Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze & Co and the transformation of intellectual life in the USA

In the last three decades of the 20th century, one particular group of French thinkers became extremely influential and famous in the USA. Compared to the British rock and roll invasion, the arrival of the works of Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze on American shores in the late 70s and early 80s caused a sensation.

Outside the university, the so-called French theory had a profound influence on the emergence of identity politics at the time, while simultaneously becoming a target of right-wing propaganda. But in university departments across the country, their poststructuralist form of radical doubt has transformed a variety of disciplines, from literature to anthropology and architecture. By the 1990s, French Theory was already deeply woven into the American cultural and intellectual fabric.

This book is the first comprehensive account of the American fortunes of these unusual philosophical stars. François Kise explores why America was such a fertile ground for French theory (providing first an exhaustive analysis of the American educational system), how such demanding writings could become so influential, as well as the particular way in which they were read and received in America, which differ greatly from those in France and Europe. Kise vividly explores many provocative critical practices inspired by French theory, and at the end he dares to shed light on the relevance of these thinkers for today's social and political activism.
