Karen Swassjan: Goethe's Philosophical View of the World
Karen A. Swassjan (Russian: Karen Aráevič Svasьấn; Armenian: Карен Свасян), born in 1948 in Tbilisi, is an Armenian philosopher, literary critic, cultural historian and anthroposophist. He is one of the most famous contemporary philosophers in the Russian-speaking world. He studied philosophy, English and French at the Yerevan State University, where he received his doctorate in the philosophy of Henri Bergson and became a professor. He translated and edited the works of Rainer Marie Rilke, Friedrich Nietzsche and Oswald Spengler into Russian, and in addition wrote numerous works from different fields - philosophy, literature, history of ideas and anthroposophy - in Russian and German. It was in the academic year 1994/1995. received an honorary mention from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for research and teaching. In 2009, he was awarded first prize in an essay contest organized by the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He now lives and works as a lecturer in Basel, Switzerland.
