Gorgija ili O sofistima

Platon

Summary

Plato: Gorgias or On the Sophists

If I had to choose between suffering misfortune and doing it, I would rather choose to be wronged than to do it to someone else.

Plato leads us through an exciting philosophical debate in which Socrates confronts the famous rhetorician Gorgias and his followers with fundamental questions about the nature of power, justice and human virtue. Through lively debate, Socrates exposes the difference between true skill and mere flattery, between good and pleasant, between apparent and real power. Is it worse to do injustice or to suffer it? Can a powerful ruler be powerless? And why is philosophy more than a play on words?

The Gorgias is not just a dialogue about rhetoric - it is a search for the foundations of a righteous life and virtue, both in the soul and in the body. Through this dialogue, Plato leads the reader to a dramatic ending in which Socrates shows with the myth of the afterlife why virtue is important both on this side of existence and on the other side of existence.
