Solovjov Vladimir

Summary

Vladimir Solovjov: From the History of Philosophy

With the study From the History of Philosophy, Solovyov shows that neither the senses, nor reason, individually or in combination, can satisfactorily replace the third form of knowledge. Sensations are relative, and concepts are conditioned. Indeed, true knowledge presupposes a third kind of knowledge. Such knowledge, faith or mystical knowledge, namely, would be impossible in itself if the subject and the object of knowledge were completely distant. It is in this interaction that we perceive the essence of the object or "idea", its permanence. Imagination (remember Kant), on a subconscious level, transforms the experiences of the senses into an object of knowledge.

Solovjov shows how all knowledge is created at the confluence of empirical, rational and "mystical" elements. Only philosophical analysis can reveal the role of the mystical. Just as the denial of the first two elements historically led to empiricism and rationalism, an overemphasized mystical element led to dogmatic manifestations in theology.

The task before us, according to Solovyov, is to free these three basic directions from their exclusivity, systematically integrating and organizing true knowledge into a complete system, which Solovyov calls "free Theosophy".
