Summary

François Jullien: The Sources of Christianity

Christianity has left a deep mark on Western philosophy. How to develop a philosophy of Christianity that is not a Christian philosophy? How to take a point of view beyond apologetics and criticism? Are the coherences of Christianity still useful for thinking, especially in the context of existence? In his lecture at the French National Library in 2016, François Jullien answers these questions by analyzing the Gospel, especially the Gospel of John, treating it like any other text, trying to understand its coherence (instead of "meaning") and study its relevance (instead of "truth"), without the need for religious conversion - exploiting its resources in the sense of a source of possibility does not require conversion. By reading the Gospel of John in this way, we discover valuable insights into the theory of existence. Jullien's consideration of Christianity will be useful to anyone interested in religion and its role in today's society.

François Jullien is a professor at the University of Paris Diderot. He is one of the most important figures of contemporary French philosophy. The work of François Jullien is on the border between sinology and general philosophy. Based on the study of the thinking of ancient China, Neo-Confucianism and the literary and aesthetic conceptions of classical China, he questions the history and categories of the European mind.
