Summary

Slavoj Žižek: Lenin 2017

Memory, Repetition and Reworking

One hundred years after the Russian Revolution, Žižek shows why Lenin's thought is still significant today.

The originality and importance of V. I. Lenin as a revolutionary leader is most often associated with the seizure of power in 1917. But in this new study and collection of Lenin's original texts, Žižek argues that Lenin's true size can be better understood from the last two years of his political life. Russia had survived a foreign invasion, an embargo, and a terrible civil war, as well as internal uprisings like the one in Kronstadt in 1921. But the new state was exhausted, isolated, and disoriented. As the expected world revolution eluded, in order for the Soviet state to survive, new paths had to be mapped.

Žižek, with his powerful and provocative insight, suggests that Lenin's courage in thinking can be recognized in his willingness to face this reality of retreat without flinching. In today's world, which is characterized by political turbulence, economic crises and geopolitical tensions, we need to return to Lenin's combination of sober lucidity and revolutionary determination.
