Heidegger Martin

Summary

Martin Heidegger: On the road to language

In the 1950s, expelled from the public and academic scene due to his National Socialist involvement, Heidegger increasingly turned to language as the theme and obsession of his philosophy. Language, of course, has been a companion of Heidegger's philosophical inventions since his early works, which can be seen, among other things, in his brilliant etymologies and his attempt to establish a new philosophical terminology, but until that period language, at least not to such an extent, was never an explicit topic of Heidegger's philosophy.

Already in his early works, Heidegger understood that traditional, big concepts such as consciousness, self-awareness, soul, spirit or mind, were not enough to grasp the complexity of the world, and above all because they point to some kind of, mostly unreachable interior. As a phenomenologist, the German philosopher had to look for new, less metaphysical strongholds and, together with Nietzsche and Husserl, he discovered language as a structure that holds the fabric of the world. Hence the titles of those texts such as "Language", "Essence of language", "Word", "Language in a poem" (because, according to Heidegger, the poetic word is the deepest, and the poetic language is richer, closest to the truth), "Path to language".
