Summary
Claude - Adrien Helvetius: About the spirit
Translated by Mirjana Dobrović, Vesna Potkovac and Melita Wolf.
In his major work On the Spirit, Helvétius concluded that only interest and passion are the foundations of all human activity. He placed the foundation of morality in the area of human self-love and egoism, understanding the human being first and foremost as sensory and emotional, who receives knowledge about the world through the senses. The treatise On the Spirit caused stormy condemnations, so that Helvétius formally renounced it under the pressure of public opinion, until it was finally condemned and publicly burned in 1759.
