Summary
Jean Starobinski: From the disease and the cure: criticism and justification of detention in the century of enlightenment
On the basis of a series of examples - of which there could have been more - I intend here to study the language and arguments used in the criticism of detention and "social conventions" in the 17th and 18th centuries. The reader should not expect a systematic research, nor a complete presentation. I wanted to listen to the words, analyze the styles. In some places it was necessary to dive deep. Diderot was supposed to be among the authors I studied in these experiments, but I succumbed to the challenge of dedicating a special book to him that has yet to be published.
