Summary
Francis M. Cornford: Principium Sapientiae
The work Cornford was engaged in before his death was one to which he himself attached great importance. As a relatively young man, he tried to expose the pre-philosophical roots of philosophy among the Greeks in the work "From Religion to Philosophy". That book contains much that is still valuable, but the progress of discovery and the growing maturity of his own mind, and the enrichment of his treasury of reading and meditation, made him aware that a new approach was necessary. The problem itself was one that occupied him more than any other in his later years as in his youth; and this work presents the results of his latest research and thoughts about him.
