Summary

Gilles Deleuze: Proust and Signs

The book Proust and Signs represents a gauntlet thrown in the face of psychoanalysis in the wake of Lacanism. Because how else can you describe a book that primarily deals with psychology (and psychiatry), and which, given the time it was written, does not mention Freud or psychoanalysis in a single word, even though psychoanalytic concepts can be found everywhere (e.g. interpretation of dreams and dreaming, partial objects, neurosis, and even patricide), but interpreted differently and placed in a completely different theory. More precisely, Freud and psychoanalysis are not mentioned in the first part, which was written before the revolution of 1968, while in the second part, where they are literally mentioned in a few places, it seems only marginally, as one more (albeit current) of thousands of different and possible points of view on the same issue, one of the possible taxonomies. Because one of the main concepts that runs through this book is perspectivism, or the possibility of multiple points of view on the same object. And this is, after all, an important aspect of Deleuze's philosophy, whose oeuvre is composed of books that each approach mostly the same or similar problems from different points of view (which implies the same procedure within each book separately, as is the case here). Another important concept that this book deals with is that of transversality, from perceptual to sexual transversality (the problem of the theory of the process of sexual transference or the theory of primordial hermaphroditism, which Proust brought into his novel by copying it directly from Darwin, Deleuze ethically explains with this book thirty years before the moral aspect of this problem became acute). This concept also contains the seeds of a future fruitful collaboration with Felix Guattari (Sandorf has so far published the books Capitalism and Schizophrenia - Antiedipus and the Thousand Plateaus and What is Philosophy?) from this collaboration.
