Summary
Siniša Mišić: Serbia 1217.
Scientifically based, but written for a wider audience, it describes a very important period in an acceptable way.
It is a period of seven decades (1166 - 1236) which in many ways forms a whole and which was a turning point.
This year marks eight centuries since Stefan Nemanjić became the first Serbian "wedding king" (1217). It is one of the most important dates in our history, especially if we look at the events that happened two years later (1219) when the Serbian Autocephalous Church was formed. Serbia became a kingdom thanks to the joint actions of two brothers, Stefan Nemanjić and Sava, and at a time of significantly changed political conditions in Southeastern Europe. The Crusader conquest of Constantinople (1204) and the overthrow of Byzantium led to major geopolitical changes.
On the ruins of a once powerful empire, several new states were created, and international relations became more complex and complicated. However, Stefan Nemanja's sons showed that they were adapted to the new situation and managed to secure the title of king instead of the previous title of grand prefect for the ruler of their country. It was a big leap in the hierarchical world order of the states of that time.
