Gordana Pokrajac: Ancient Reflections in the Poetics and Poetry of the Dubrovnik Renaissance
"The book Ancient Reflections in the Poetics and Poetry of the Dubrovnik Renaissance is the fruit of many years of scientific work by Gordana Pokrajac, focused on elucidating the multiple influences of classical philosophy and literature on the foundation of the poetics of Dubrovnik Renaissance poetry. Based on her reliable knowledge of the ancient tradition, the author systematically, in her monograph, provided an overview and argumentative insight into the complex cultural trends, illuminating the continuous duration, along with the conflict and interweaving, of Platonist and Aristotelian philosophical-poetic orientations in the context of the European Renaissance. She carefully considered the role of Italian literature as a mediator between the ancient tradition and Dubrovnik poetry, discovering ways of accepting classical philosophical and literary thought in Italy, as well as ways of adapting it to the medieval and Renaissance cultural model to what extent the explicitly formulated poetic attitudes of classical thinkers, contained in various writings of a philosophical and aesthetic character, and the positions of Italian erudites expressed in Renaissance treatises were the basis for the implicit poetics of Dubrovnik poets, who presented their poetic understandings exclusively in dedications or in the works themselves. Marking precisely the paradigmatic elements of the ancient heritage, G. Pokrajac analyzed their presence in Dubrovnik Renaissance literature following this phenomenon in philosophical-poetic treatises N. Gučetić, A. Meda, M. Monaldi and poetry ranging from M. Vetranović to D. Zlatarić. Conceived in this way, the book Antique reflections in the poetics and poetry of the Dubrovnik Renaissance has a double value because it is both a valuable literary-historical monograph in the field of raguseology and a kind of lexicon of classical mythology, philosophy and literature."
