Summary

Sanja Šoštarić: From Fame to Oblivion: The Reception of Paul Bourget's Literary Criticism and Novel Work

The book analyzes the reception of Paul Bourget's literary criticism and novel work in the period from the publication of his first reviews in the magazine La Nouvelle Revue (1881) to the novel Le Démon de midi (1914). The research focused on the analysis of both extratextual (author and reader, production and distribution of the work, relations in the literary field) and textual factors (formal and content elements of the work) that were crucial for the reception of Bourget's work. The paper will be based on the analysis of two synchronic fragments in Bourget's work, the limit of which is represented by 1902 - the year of publication of his novel with the thesis L'Étape and the death of Émile Zola, Bourget's main literary rival. The final part of the manuscript is devoted to the analysis of the reasons for the sudden loss of interest in Bourget's work and the issue of the canon, that is, determining the place assigned to Bourget in the history of French literature and in literature textbooks. A special section of the book refers to the dynamic reception of Bourget's work in Croatian literature, especially at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
