Bukarica Miljenko

Summary

Miljenko Bukarica: Lights that go out

The fate of the young, talented poet, prose writer and literary critic Miljenko Bukarica (1906 - 1925) is more than interesting and above all sad. Already in his first year of studying Romance and Slavic studies at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, he was sentenced in November 1924 for participating in student demonstrations in defense of the University's autonomy. to 14 days in prison and two years of expulsion from Zagreb and secret expulsion from the university. This had a decisive influence on the young sensitive poet to commit suicide in April of the following year. At the time of the appearance of his first book of poetry, numerous texts were written about him, and the talented poet and essayist was especially warned by Bogdan Radica and Ton Smerdel. In the 70s of the last century, Zdravko Mužinić also published several valuable texts, while Luko Paljetak encouraged the compilation and processing of this exceptional, but forgotten opus.
