Robert Graves - between history and myth

"There is no money in poetry, but equally there is no poetry in money."

Robert Graves (1895–1985) remains inscribed in the history of British and world literature as a poet, novelist and thinker who, above all, believed in the power of words and myths. His experience in the trenches of the First World War turned into poetry of powerful sincerity, and his erudition and love for the classical heritage shaped works that still fascinate with their depth today. As the author of the novel I, Klaudija showed how history can come alive in the hands of a true storyteller, while in the study of the White Goddess he opened the door to the understanding of poetry as a spiritual and mythical quest.

His personal life was as turbulent as his imagination. He maintained intense romantic relationships with women and men. Love and breakups, passionate relationships and tragic episodes, especially the relationship with poet Laura Riding, shaped his understanding of poetry as a destiny calling. In his later years he found refuge in Mallorca, where he created many of his most important works and lived in tension between family challenges and tireless creative discipline.

Graves was an intellectual who did not obey authorities, but searched for the truth about man, language and myth in his own way. His work exudes not only aesthetic power but also spiritual courage - the belief that literature can be an encounter with the eternal and unfathomable within us. This is why Robert Graves remains not only a great writer, but also a unrepeatable personality, seeker and witness in one person.

I, Claudius (I, Claudius, 1934)

A masterpiece of historical fiction, which brings an unforgettable view of the Roman Empire from the inside, through the eyes of one of its most unusual emperors. The novel is written in the form of an autobiography of the Roman emperor Claudius and takes us through a turbulent period of Roman history: from the reign of Augustus, through Tiberius and Caligula, all the way to Claudius' own ascension to the throne. Shy, stuttering and often understated, Claudius is portrayed as a silent observer who chronicles the intrigues, betrayals, murders and perversions of the imperial court. Graves relies on historical sources (Suetonius, Tacitus, Pliny), but creates a tense and psychologically rich novel that is still one of the most important and most read works of historical prose. The White Goddess (1948)

This is one of the most influential and controversial works of the 20th century, at the intersection of mythology, literature and spirituality. In this fascinating work, Graves presents his own theory of the existence of a Proto-Indo-European goddess - a primal female deity who symbolizes life, death and rebirth. This book is not only a study of religion and myths, but also a passionate essay on poetry - Graves believes that the poet is essentially a priest in the service of the "White Goddess" and that true poetry is only possible through her inspiration. The book caused numerous controversies, but also influenced generations of writers, poets and researchers. Today it is considered a cult classic. Find the book in the Biblos antiquarian webshop.

It is one of those Graves novels in which satire and myth are intertwined in a peculiar, witty and provocative way. At the center is an unusual hero, Billy, who is transformed by circumstances and human imagination saint - although he himself remains a man of flesh and blood, imperfect and vulnerable.
Graves here plays with the question of how saints and legends are created, what is "holiness" and where does the line between faith and the human need for a story end. The novel is at the same time ironic and warm, imbued with humor and deep reflection on human nature, so it offers the reader both entertainment and a stimulus for thinking. A Toast to Ava Gardner 1958)

It is a unique and witty collection of poems in which Robert Graves, already as a mature poet, turns to modern icons and eternal themes of love, beauty and transience. Graves, known for his fascination with the "eternal goddess", finds in Ava Gardner a symbol of the contemporary divine - a woman who simultaneously belongs to the world of glamor and the world of archetypes. The poems exude irony, passion and refined language, showing that even in his later years the poet does not lose his curiosity or the power to discover traces of myth in everyday life.
