Summary
Eliade Mircea: Yoga: Immortality and Freedom
The book represents one of the most important and exhaustive studies of the main Indian ascetic techniques, as well as their history. It is a welcome addition for a fuller understanding of the philosophy of the East.
And although it is not an easy subject, the book presents with clarity and precision what the beliefs and practice of yoga consist of, and how it arose from ancient Indian religions.
The book presents the tradition of yoga with exceptional directness and detail. Its credibility rests in the fact that its author spent years studying yoga in various Indian ashrams, as well as universities, where he gained first-hand yogic experience. Topics he discusses include Patafijali's Yoga-Sutras, yogic techniques (i.e., "one-point" concentration, body postures, breathing disciplines), as well as the relationship of yoga to Brahmanism, Buddhism, Tantrism, Oriental alchemy, mystical erotica, and shamanism.
