Summary
Seth Godin: Tribes
A tribe is any group of people, large or small, united by a leader or idea. Millions of years ago, people joined tribes according to their religion, political affiliation, ethics or even music. It's in our nature. Today, the Internet has removed geographical, financial and time barriers. The blogs and social networks we use now help existing tribes grow and also enable the creation and formation of new tribes - groups of 10 or 10 million people who care about their cell phones, a political campaign, or a new way to fight global warming. Who will lead these tribes? The Internet can do amazing things, but it can't take the lead. Leadership comes from individuals – people who, like you, are passionate about something. Anyone today who wants to stand out and make a difference has all the skills at their fingertips. If you think leadership belongs to others and not to you, think again - leaders come in surprising forms. It's not easy, but it's easier than you think. Consider Joel Spolski and his international tribe of terrifyingly smart software engineers, or Gary Vaynerchuk, a digital expert with a huge following. Chris Charma leads a tribe of mountaineers who climb incredible heights, while Mitch Mathew, vice president of Microsoft, is the leader of marketers.
