Summary
Daniel Walker: Spiritual and demonic magic
From Ficino to Campanella
Daniel Pickering Walker (1914-1985), who spent most of his working life at the Warburg Institute in London, devoted one of his most significant works to the problem of Renaissance magic. It is the book "Spiritual and Demonic Magic from Ficino to Campanella" which was published in 1958 by the Warburg Institute, and which most historians of philosophy consider one of the key books for understanding Renaissance philosophy or better, the Renaissance experience of the world.
In the book, Walker mainly deals with the philosophy of Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499), the most significant representative of Renaissance Neoplatonism, priest, philosopher-theologian, physician, astrologer and magician, leader of the Platonic Academy in Florence, which was founded by Cosimo Medici at the urging of the Greek intellectual Georgios Gemist Plethon.
Only in the second part of the book does Walker devote himself to problematizing magic itself, its assumptions and different forms of magic. Tu se zapravo pojašnjavaju temeljni mehanizmi magijskog djelovanja. At the same time, Walker especially warns about the distinction between natural and demonic magic, which is especially important for the Renaissance period, and which Ficino was particularly concerned about.
Using the example of Ficino and his followers, Walker tried to show how intensively magic was present at all levels of life in the Renaissance.
