Summary
Yagyu Munenori: The Life-Giving Sword
This is a translation of one of the most important classics on Zen and swordsmanship. Yagyu Munenori was so famous for his swordsmanship that he was eventually appointed official swordsmanship instructor to two Tokugawa shoguns. (This position was also held by Miyamoto Musashi, although he left no written record of it.)
Yagyu's style, better known as Shinkage-ryu, was considered the official style of the Tokugawa dynasty for centuries. His spiritual mentor was the Zen priest Takuan. In this book, Yagyu's spirituality based on Zen Buddhism is clearly reflected in the central idea of the "life-creating sword" - which dictates controlling the opponent with a spiritual readiness to fight, rather than participating in the fight itself. His skill at restraint and diplomacy made him a trusted political and military adviser to the two shoguns. This book presents the ideas of Zen teachers about non-attachment and non-violence.
