In its first part, the book provides a general introduction to archaeology. The entire chapter "What is archaeology" focuses on archeology as a scientific discipline as a whole. However, in the later chapters, which are primarily devoted to prehistoric archaeology, numerous facts, thoughts and conclusions are presented that can be applied to other archaeological periods as well. The difference is that they are explained here and supported by examples from the field of prehistoric archaeology.
The book is structured in six main chapters, which are further divided into a number of subchapters. The first chapter deals with issues related to defining archaeology, its goals and tasks, and its position and connection with other related scientific disciplines, especially history and anthropology. The second chapter shows the development of the study and research of prehistory, starting from the speculative period that occurs with ancient authors all the way to the contemporary, analytically oriented phase.
The third chapter deals with different ways of periodizing prehistory and the criteria on which such divisions are based. After that, the chronological periodization that is most often applied is shown, whereby individual periods are presented through their most important characteristics. The fourth chapter is devoted to archaeological sources and archaeological material. This is the most comprehensive chapter, in which archaeological findings, their different types and types, as well as sites, their typology and the objects found on them are discussed in detail.
The fifth chapter deals with the concepts of culture and civilization. These terms in archeology have specific meanings and interpretations that differ from their everyday understanding, but also from the way they are used in certain other scientific fields.
The last, sixth chapter is dedicated to chronology, that is, relative and absolute determination of time. In the framework of relative chronology, stratigraphy and typology are explained, while in the part related to absolute chronology, some of the most important and most frequently applied natural science methods are presented, which are used to determine the absolute age of archaeological finds and sites.
