Complete topography of the Military Region of Karlovac. FRAS, Franjo Julije, pedagogue and writer (Jarenina near Maribor, 11. VIII. 1794 — Vransko near Žalac, 11. III. 1868). From 1820 he served as head teacher in Glina, and in 1822 he was appointed school director of the Karlovac Generalate and managed the Krajina education system until his retirement in 1849. At his suggestion, the first schools were founded (1827) and he greatly contributed to their progress. He was a corresponding member of several economic societies in Styria and Carniola and a regular member of a gardening society in Bavaria. He prepared several educational informational works for teachers, of which the ones in the German language stand out. As an experienced pedagogue, he gives instructions for work in each subject and talks about women's education. In Croatian, he wrote instructions for working in textbooks and instructions for implementing the curriculum. He wrote several treatises on gardening and fruit growing in German, mostly printed in Karlovac. His capital work Vollständige Topographie der Karlstädter-Militärgrenze was printed in Zagreb in 1835 and in 1988 in a Croatian translation in Gospić under the title Topography of the Karlovac Military Territory. This work is a reliable source of topographical, geographical, historical, archaeological, ethnographic, military, church and political data recorded on the basis of the situation in the 1830s, part of Croatia from Kupe and Una via Kapela and Velebit to the Adriatic Sea and Zrmanja and is therefore placed alongside Hiezinger's, Vitezović's, Valvasor's and Ratkaj's works on Croatia.
