Summary
Aleksandra Kostić: Ethical criticism of art
Views from contemporary analytical aesthetics
Is it justified to criticize a work of art because of the ethical views it expresses? This question is answered by a number of theorists of analytical provenance. The argumentation ranges from the proposition that an ethical deficiency is always an aesthetic deficiency, to the idea that immoral ideas help us to better understand the world since they open up inaccessible experiences, to theses about the autonomy of art. Finally, the analysis of the film Triumph of the Will opens perhaps the most important dilemma about the relationship between beauty and evil: can a work be considered beautiful if it glorifies evil?
