Summary

Voltaire: Philosophical Letters

In his lifetime, Voltaire (Francois Marie Arouet) wrote 20,000 letters, corresponding with 1,200 different minds of his time. However, Letters relating to the English nation, published in London in 1733 and in Rouen in 1734 as Philosophical Letters (Lettres philosophiques), are epistles-essays-journeys in which Voltaire describes his view of British society. Living in London, more precisely in Wandsworth, from 1726 to 1729, in voluntary exile after imprisonment in the Bastille (from April 17 to May 2, 1726), he befriended Sir Everard Faulkner (1694–1758), an English merchant and diplomat. During this period, he wrote twenty-five letters, not without irony and sarcasm, but with very original images and examples. Imbued with erudition and meticulous analyzes of social phenomena, but also the works of great men such as Newton, Locke, Shakespeare, Descartes... these letters cover all the important topics not only of Britain but of the entire civilization. Because of its very broad subject matter and literary style, this book belongs to Voltaire's literary oeuvre, although its epistemology is philosophical. After its publication in France, formally because the publisher did not seek permission from the censors, but essentially because of its criticism of French absolutism and praise of the British constitutional monarchy, the book was banned and publicly burned. Voltaire had to leave Paris again. But, as he says in the "Fifth Letter" (On the Anglican Faith): "The Englishman, as a free man, goes to heaven precisely by the path he chooses." And Walter chose his own path - the uncompromising path of freedom of speech.
