Summary
Axel Honneth: The idea of socialism
An attempt to modernize
For more than 150 years, the idea of socialism inspired all those who articulated criticisms of capitalist social relations and tried to imagine a more humane alternative to capitalism. In the book The Idea of Socialism. An attempt at modernization, Axel Honneth points to the causes of the gradual weakening of socialism's ability to inspire political action. These causes are in the anachronistic social theoretical premises of the era of early industrialization. In order to restore the former vitality to the socialist vision of a society based on the ideal of "social freedom", Honneth undertakes the complex task of extracting it from the outdated theoretical context of industrialism and placing it on new social-theoretical and normative foundations suitable for our time.
