Summary
Plato: Lahetus Or on Courage
The dialogue takes place in 424 BC, that is, during the Peloponnesian War in which Athens and Sparta clashed. Lysimachus and Melesias, the first two characters who appear, are actually the sons of two distinguished Greeks, Aristides the Just, a great statesman, and Thucydides, a politician, orator and historian. Lysimachus and Melesia, since they were not of great importance in public life, would like to give their sons, named after their grandfathers, the best possible education and thus achieve fame worthy of those whose names they bear. Therefore, they turn to two Greek strategists, i.e. military leaders, Nikias and Lahetus, for advice on what would be the best education, first of all in fighting in armor, say in handling swords, spears and other weapons.
