Metafizika I-II

Avicenna Abu Ali Ibn Sina

Summary

Abu Ali Ibn Sina Avicenna: Metaphysics I -II

The set of books "Metaphysics" (volumes 1 and 2) by the author Abu Ali Ibn Sina Avicenna represents a monumental work of Islamic and medieval philosophy, which is essential for understanding Avicenna's entire philosophical system. The Croatian edition, which is bilingual (compared to the Arabic original and the Croatian translation) and contains extensive notes and a foreword by the translator Daniel Bučan, was published by the Demetra publishing house.

Set description

This two-volume set includes Avicenna's exploration of the fundamental questions of existence (battle) and the causes of all things, which forms the basis of his ontology. The work is the sixth part of his encyclopedia "The Book of Natural Things" (Kitab al-Shifa, or "The Book of Healing"), but it ultimately functions as an independent and fundamental "first philosophy".

Through two volumes, Avicenna develops a complex theory of divine causation, synthesizing the ideas of Aristotle, Neoplatonism and Islamic theology. Central is the discussion of existence and essence (being), with Avicenna distinguishing between what something is (its essence/quidditas) and the fact that something exists (existence).

Main topics covered include:

  • Ontology: Analysis of the nature of existence, the categories of being, and the common features of all entity.
  • Proving the existence of God: Research into the causes of all reality, which leads to meditation on the nature of God as a necessary being (Wajib al-wujud).
  • Relation between God and the world: Development of the theory of causality (causation) that explains the relationship between necessary (God) and contingent (created) existence.
  • Philosophical theology: Establishing metaphysics as a fundamental science that precedes other philosophical and scientific disciplines.

This set is not only a historical philosophical reading, but also a foundational text that had a far-reaching influence on medieval European scholasticism and later Islamic thinkers, making it indispensable for anyone dealing with philosophy, theology, or the history of science.

The hardcover edition of Demeter with a bilingual display ensures a high level of expertise and accessibility for in-depth study of this classic work.
