Summary
Umberto Galimberti: Myths of our time
Youth and intelligence, happiness and maternal love. Furthermore, fashion and technology, security and power, and then the market, economic growth, new technologies...all these are myths of our time, ideas that, more than some others, petrify us and the society in which we live. These are the ideas that advertisements and mass media propose as values and impose as social practices, creating a language that makes them attractive and desirable. Unlike the ideas we think, myths are ideas that possess us and rule us with the help of mechanisms that are not logical, but psychological, and hence deeply rooted in our soul. They are simple ideas that we have mythologized, because they are easy and do not cause problems, they make judgments easier, they give us a sense of security.
We must, however, move away from the tranquility that our mythologized ideas play on us, because many sufferings and disorders are born precisely from ideas that, snuggled comfortably in the laziness of our thoughts, do not allow us to understand the world we live in, especially the rapid changes in it. However, being in the world without understanding it is a sure way to alienation from it. To regain our presence in it, we must first reexamine our myths. This is exactly what this book deals with.
