Summary
Mosses Mendelssohn, Johann Karl Mohsen: On the Enlightenment of the People
Since nearly two and a half centuries ago, German educators raised the issue of enlightenment, it continues to occupy academics and the general public with undiminished ferocity, at almost regular intervals. What is enlightenment anyway? Is it a unique discursive formation or rather a movement, perhaps even the mentality of an age? Can enlightenment be located not only conceptually, but also geographically and temporally? Are there "real" and "false" enlightenment? Is – or how is – enlightenment possible? Does the previous experience with enlightenment speak in favor of continuing that "unfinished project" or rather about the necessity of its suspension?
What significance, finally, does the question of enlightenment have in our contemporary and local context? Many answers were offered - and even more new questions were raised...
