Summary
Maurice Merleau-Ponty: Praise to philosophy
And other essays
A man who is a witness to his own research, that means his own inner disorder, cannot feel himself the heir of such successful people whose names I see on these walls. Moreover, if he is a philosopher, that is, if he knows that he knows nothing, how could he believe that he is called to take a place in this chair, and how could he even desire it? The answer to that question is very simple: from the very beginning, the Collège de France accepted the obligation to convey to those attending the lectures, not acquired truths, but the idea of free research. Last winter, the administration decided to retain the philosophy chair because philosophical non-knowledge is the crown of his research spirit. When a philosopher, dear colleagues, tries to win your favor, you yourself know that the reason for this is his desire to lead a more complete philosophical life, and when you give him your votes, you do so to support him in this effort.
