Summary

Gilles Deleuze: Difference and Repetition

The masterpiece "Difference and Repetition" was published by Gilles Deleuze in 1968. Deleuze creates in the most fruitful philosophical atmosphere of the twentieth century (in the period from 1965 to 1975), when the most important books were published alongside him by Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida and Jean Francois Lyotard. So he is not a lonely genius, surrounded by misunderstanding. On the contrary, his philosophical genius is the most radical, and the density of his ideas the greatest. After "Difference and Repetition", which is one of the segments of Deleuz's doctoral thesis (the other two segments are Spinoza and the Problem of Expression and The Logic of Meaning, both published in 1968), it is simply impossible to approach the concepts of difference and identity the way they were approached before. If the concept of identity has always been expressed in the identity of the concept with itself, if the concept, since the time of Greek philosophy, assumed ideal meanings, with Deleuze the difference becomes a quantity that is maintained on its own feet, but this, at the same time, means that he brings out of balance an entire tradition that, in order to be effective, to exist at all, had to lie on a solid, unmoved foundation. If the philosophical edifice was built by, logically, first laying the foundation, then raising the walls and, finally, installing the roof, after Deleuze's book philosophers had to learn to build from the same material, but without a pre-given foundation. Because, writes Deleuze, criticizing the previous understanding of philosophy, rejecting divine (transcendental) authority, the foundation always comes to us from heaven. Now the foundation (identity) is collapsing in on itself, creating a heterogeneous environment that requires new concepts. That is why Deleuze creates concepts, considering this creation as the highest philosophical activity. That is why in this book, which, the author recommends, should be read as a detective novel, we find conceptual monsters and conceptual miracles such as transcendental empiricism, kaosmos, disjunctive union (disjunctive synthesis), as well as a whole series of fascinating conceptual combinations that are still waiting for their interpreters, their (perhaps Deleuze would say) mistresses and their lovers.
