Summary

Arthur Lovejoy: The Great Chain of Being

The Study of the History of an Idea

This is a work that undoubtedly represents the basis of all historical and philosophical analysis of the 20th century. From the time it was created in the form of a lecture, which the author gave at Harvard in 1932 and 1933, it gained a reputation as a cornerstone of the "history of ideas". Lovejoy sees the history of philosophy as a collection of different concepts, from which, as one of the best examples, he singles out the idea of the "great chain of being", that is, of the universe which, from the point of view of theology, science and in terms of value, is connected by pre-determined degrees that we find in all stages of life.

Lovejoy sees a duality in nature and society, according to which both error and truth exist as part of the natural order of the world. The past reminds us that it is unlikely that the dominant forms of thought of our time - which we certainly see as clear, coherent and firmly grounded - will be similarly and unreservedly accepted in the future. "The Great Chain of Being" is a journey into the past and a journey with a clear mission: to challenge the common opinion that everything is known, that is, that what was known once could not be changed in another time.

The author insists on the "intrinsic value of diversity", which he contrasts with certainty as a warning. This does not mean that he tolerates indifference or relativization as values in themselves, but that he values the mental and physical processes that take place in human beings. As Peter Stanlis observes, "Faith in the great chain of being was finally largely eradicated by the combined influences of romantic idealism, Darwin's evolutionary theory, and Einstein's theory of relativity." Few books question the follies of the past and remain alive as long as this great work by Arthur Lovejoy.
