Joseph Lavallee, Louis-Francois Cassas: Travels in Istria and Dalmatia. writer (Dieppe, 23.VIII.1747 – London, 28.II.1816). Of noble origin, he began his military career, but soon began to write and publish poems, becoming a freelance artist - writer. Eruditely educated, he used a wide range of historical, travel and other topics. He wrote the text of the book in which the copper engravings of the cities of the same period were published. Adriatic coast → L. F. Cassasa (Voyage pittoresque et historique de l'Istrie et de la Dalmatie, Paris 1802), including Poreč and Pula. Since he did not visit the regions he was describing, he used Cassas's travel diary, which is now lost, to write, but also his previously published and available literature about Istria and Dalmatia, primarily by Jacob Spon and → G. Whelera, → A. Fortis and Robert Adam. In the first part there is an extensive history. overview of Istria and Dalmatia according to classical and other pov. sources and texts, and in the second part, Cassas' journey from Venice and Trieste via Poreč and Pula to Zadar and Split is recounted.
