Summary
Andrej Tarkovsky: Martirologium Dnevnici 1970 - 1986
This book contains the complete texts of all seven volumes of the personal diaries of Andrei Tarkovsky, Russian director, writer and actor, one of the most significant and influential film artists of both Russian and world cinema of the 20th century, covering the period from 1970 to December 1986. When Tarkovski started writing his diary before the start of filming "Solaris", he called it Martyrology - a list of sufferings, as if he already knew how difficult and thorny his life and creative path would be. The pages of Martirologium intertwine the behind-the-scenes life of Soviet and world cinema, politics and creativity, philosophical thoughts and daily political problems, Moscow, Rome, Paris, Stockholm, and in the middle of it all is Tarkovsky himself, both respected and despised, both proud and broken, both terminally ill and immortal. The reader goes through the author's life, finds out what books he read, what movies he watched, what disturbed him and what delighted him, what influenced his work, what inspired him, who he learned from, who he socialized with, how he evaluated the actions and work of other people, some of whom are still alive. Martyrology is a unique testimony about the life of the great director, written by his own hand. It is the confession of an artist in search of a path and artistic freedom, a touching glorification of life, full of hope and faith, even in the face of death, because his creativity, his ideal, his sacrifice are nothing but the ultimate gesture of faith and hope in man.
