Summary
Aldo Milohnić: Theories of Contemporary Theater and Performance
The study represents an important and comprehensive contribution to the critical consideration of key theoretical positions as well as problems within the framework of various current, sometimes complementary, and sometimes opposing theories, dedicated to the study of contemporary theater and performance. In doing so, the performing arts are understood as a social practice and their potentials and limitations are considered in the context of contemporary neoliberal capitalism.
Aldo Milohnić's complex book leads us through the winding and often intricate paths of contemporary theories of performance, inviting us to think together with the author, who, by opening the right questions, leads us to conclusions but also possibilities for further assumptions. The manner in which the central theme of the relationship between art and politics in the domain of the performing arts has been handled represents a fundamentally important contribution to the current theoretical production. At a moment when "political art" and especially "political theater" become phrases that have been repeated so many times that they increasingly sound like an empty promise (at worse) or an empty signifier (at better), Milohnić's book manages to rearticulate this relationship in an innovative and politically engaged way.
