Summary
Branko Vitale: Four Centuries of Public Health and Biomedicine in Croatia
Fifty eminent authors from various medical and historical fields participated in the writing of this monograph. For the first time in our medical literature, a comprehensive review of the development of biomedicine in Croatia from the 17th century to the end of the 20th century has been prepared. In addition to an overview of the development of biomedical sciences in Croatia, at the end of the book, a special chapter containing 16 essays outlines the social and scientific frameworks within which biomedicine in Croatia should develop predictably during the 21st century. The development strategy of our healthcare system has a firm foothold in our heritage; from the introduction of quarantine and sanitary cordon in the 16th century, through vaccination of the population against smallpox at the beginning of the 19th century, all the way to A. Štampar's commitment to social medicine and national health.
