Summary
H. J. Mackinder: Democratic ideals and reality
Mackinder's book "Democratic ideals and reality" is motivated by an extremely important question of political theory and practice: how to regulate relations between small and large states in the world in order to avoid violent conflicts and the formation of a supranational world government of an authoritarian character. Mackinder has in mind that a large-scale war is fought approximately every hundred years, and that therefore a system of international relations should be designed as soon as possible so that future generations are not exposed to the same sufferings and disasters. Mackinder's book contains important insights into why it may not have been possible (or at all) to create an international organization that could operate on a planetary scale to achieve "perpetual" peace?
