Constant Benjamin

Summary

Benjamin Constant: Excerpts of an abandoned work on a possible republican constitution in a large state

B. Constant wrote this work for about fifteen years, in a period decisively marked by the Brimer coup. What was written before and after the coup d'état could mostly be concluded on the basis of allusions to current events.

The goal of Constan's work, as he himself claimed, was the adoption of a constitution for a society whose members would enjoy the greatest possible freedom, and the fact that it would be truly republican stemmed from the belief that a republic is the only regime capable of enabling the achievement of this goal. But, devoting himself to this work, he obviously firmly decided to realize it and implement it systematically, he was at the same time deeply aware of what this effort meant in the projection of time, in the historical perspective, the great perspective of the history of mankind, because standing up for the republic at that time meant not only following the immediate and instinctive urge for freedom, but also giving its life a historical meaning. The republic, which will free people from all shackles, represented for him a completion, the last step in a centuries-long ascent. These pages were written precisely in such a double belief, and if we wanted to fully identify with their author, we would have to read them without avoiding their double determination for a single moment.

Those two inextricably linked faiths - faith in freedom and faith in progress - inspired this youthful work and never for a moment stopped guiding the actions and thoughts of this important participant of the French Revolution, who even before his death felt that he could declare with full right: "For 40 years I defended the same principle, freedom in everything..."
