Summary
Stevan Nedeljković: Balance of power - from Thucydides to Trump
Monographic study Balance of power from Thucydides to Trump by Stevan Nedeljković explores one of the most enduring, but also the most contested ideas of international relations - the balance of power. From ancient Greece to the contemporary competition between Washington and Beijing, the author shows how states strive to survive in a world characterized by uncertainty, anarchy, rivalry and conflicting interests. A special focus is placed on the anomaly of the post-Cold War period, when America shaped the global order almost unhindered and when traditional balancing mechanisms were absent. Finally, the author points to the restoration of the balance of power in the era of US presidents Donald Trump and Joseph Biden.
The book connects theory and practice, history and modernity, offering a comprehensive overview of key events and debates. At the same time, it provides a tool for understanding today's geopolitical dynamics - from the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific. With this work, the author tries to make the abstract world of theory less nebulous for the readers, and the almost elusive world of international relations practice somewhat more comprehensible.
