Bojan Kovačević: Hidden Federalism
Federalist experience in European integration processes
Bojan Kovačević introduces the reader in a convincing and clear way to the complexity and interdependence of the relationship between federalism, freedom and democracy in the European Union. His main argument is that the EU does not represent an international organization "whose sovereign masters are the states that created it, but a new community that has its own 'sovereign rights' and whose subjects are the citizens of the member states" (Kovačević). The author's coherent line of reasoning, his deep knowledge and theoretical understanding of federal constitutions, as well as the way in which he created the structure of his work present to the readers a new, sometimes challenging, understanding of a supranational community that lacks "its own demos" (Kovačević).
Only a theoretician whose thought is mathematically clear and at the same time deeply imbued with philosophical tradition can produce such valuable knowledge about the European Union.
