Summary

Sebastian A. Kukavica: The Spectacle of the Fall of the West

"The Spectacle of the Fall of the West" by Sebastian A. Kukavica is the first interdisciplinary study in the Croatian language that, at the intersection of literary science and the history of political ideas, develops a systematic theory of the decadent novel as a genre that aestheticizes the spectacle of the fall of the modern West. Combining literary theory, literary history and literary criticism perspectives, Kukavica builds a genealogy of the decadent novel through the interpretations of Sade, Musset, d'Aurevilly, Bourges, Huysmans, Rachilde, D'Annunzi, Rodenbach, Merežkovski and others. At the same time, through the analysis of the political thought of Bonaldo, Novalis, Pobedonostsev, Strauss, Spengler, Jünger, MacIntyre, the author presents his own theory of conservative anti-modernism, shedding light on the neglected tradition of culturally pessimistic criticism of modernity and modernity.

The final part of the book provides analyzes of six novels, "The Desperate" by Léon Bloy, "Mr. de Phocas" by Jean Lorrain, "The Sailor Who Betrayed the Sea" by Yuki Mishima, "Shameless Nightbirds" by José Donos, "American Psycho" by Bret Easton Ellis and "Pygmies" by Chuck Palahniuk, which despite their decadent core, were rarely or never read in that key. In this comprehensive dissertation, Kukavica shows that the decadent novel is not just a relic of the "fin de siècle", but a potent and subversive form that mirrors and exposes the cracks of the modern era.
