Summary
Kirsten Wolf: 24 hours in the Viking world
A day in the life of the people of that time
Get to know the Viking world as it really was, within twenty-four hours of the lives of the people of that time. A vengeful woman and a skald, a shipbuilder and a runist, a farmer and a seer - these are all ordinary people who bring the medieval world to life in a striking way.
Go back in time, step into the world of the Vikings and spend a day with the people who lived there.
The Viking Age witnessed perhaps the most dramatic changes in medieval history; the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden were formed, Iceland was completely inhabited by humans, and the pagan Scandinavian religion gave way to Christianity. The population also witnessed a rapid development of technology during this period: bridges and fortifications were built, and there were great advances in shipbuilding and navigation, which made sea voyages, marauding expeditions and attempts at colonization much more comprehensive than before.
With this book we will spend twenty-four hours in the company of the medieval population of continental Scandinavia and Iceland. Every hour we will meet a new person - from farmers to kings, from merchants to warriors, from legislators to scribes - and we will explore the different nuances of the society in which they lived. What can the lives of ordinary people tell us about the Viking world itself?
Find out what skill was needed to build the terrible Viking ship Drakar, discover how vidarka treated wounded warriors and get to know the real Viking world from the perspective of the people of that time.
