Summary
Edward Gibbon: The decline and fall of the Roman Empire IV.
From the preface:
What Gibbon presented in the previous volume "The decline and fall of the Roman Empire" as the main causes of the weakening of the Empire, which ultimately led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire, in this volume he additionally explained the events that, from year to year, threatened the survival of the eastern, Constantinople part empires.
The causes can be reduced to two basic ones: the internal one, largely determined by controversies within Christianity. And the external one: barbarian threats and long-term warfare with Persia.
